He graduated from high school in Beaumont and worked his way through Texas A & M University until he graduated in 1938. He was a proud alumnus of Texas A & M University and attended annual reunions until 1995. He served in the U. S. Army, having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He married his sweetheart and best friend Jerry Combs in Savannah, GA on May 3, 1941. Elmer and Jerry moved to Baytown where Elmer rice farmed for many years. He still holds the record for rice and soybean yield per acre in one season. Elmer farmed most of the land in the Mont Belvieu area.
Elmer was a devoted family man. He enjoyed spending time watching his grandchildren grow up and took them on many adventures when they were younger. He also enjoyed time spent with friends and frequently had evenings out. Elmer was an avid fisherman and frequently cooked the fish for family and friends at tailgate parties. While his children were growing up, he was known in the neighborhood as the one who had the icebox for a BBQ pit and had BBQs for neighboring friends. Elmer was full of life until the end.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Jerry Combs, his parents, and sister Lois Hughes. He is survived by his son, Stephen Poutra and wife Robyn Sewell-Poutra of Baytown; daughter, Tina Venner and husband Bill of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, David Poutra of Baytown and Brent Feraci and wife Holly of Alexandria, VA; brother, George Poutra of Orange; and sister, Moscelene Meyers of The Woodlands.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Puckett, Robert Bolmanskie, Johnny Bolmanskie, Kenneth Troxell, Donnie Reasoner, and Ralph Oler. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Gentry, Larry Gentry, Bill Venner, and Brent Feraci.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, March 30, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Goodell officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery with military honors.
