Dr. Hamilton Wright Kilpatrick III, M.D., was born May 28, 1925, at what was then, Memorial Baptist Hospital (now Southwest Memorial), in Houston, TX. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Jovita Ilfrey Kilpatrick and Hamilton Wright Kilpatrick, Jr.; brother, Ivy Lee Kilpatrick; and granddaughter, Jackie Lee. A devoted son, his responsibilities to his family were his main priority. From milking cows to delivering papers, he helped his family, learning discipline and hard work at a very young age.
H.W., known by many as Doc, knew, from the time he was in fourth grade, that he was going to be a doctor. He graduated Georgetown High School and eagerly began his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Southwestern University during the beginning of World War II, at which time he became a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and promptly joined the Navy July 1st, 1943. There was a pre medical program that the Navy offered at Southwestern during this time and he was transferred from station to station and then served overseas in the Philippines, where he learned invaluable lessons and made lifelong friends. During his time in the Navy, he honorably served from 1943 to 1946 and married his first wife, Mary Francis Henderson of Georgetown, TX.
Everyone who knew H.W., knows that he would not allow anything to stand in his way. Even though the war was long and hard, he was not discouraged in his pursuit of becoming a doctor. He graduated Baylor College of Medicine in 1952 with his Doctorate in Medicine. He began practicing medicine in 1953, working in emergency rooms and taking several other doctors' calls, traveling frequently from hospital to hospital, and often making house calls, once more showing his love and enduring commitment to his countless patients and beloved profession. Mary bore him three children during this time before preceding him in death in 1978.
Dr. H.W. Kilpatrick III M.D., practiced medicine in Baytown, TX for over 40 years. On November 30, 1979, H.W. married Charlotte Rena Hicks of Baytown, TX, who just so happened to be one of the many babies he delivered throughout his practice. Their union would become the symbol of hope, strength and love for many. Charlotte bore him two more sons and together, they adopted a baby daughter.
Doc never did his job halfway; his dedication, commitment, strength and love was shown through the people he touched in his, more than 50, years of practice and through the love shown to his family. In his later years, the doctor became very close to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, his pastors and church families. He was an avid rancher, groundbreaking and caring doctor, a skilled pilot, a proud and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His many achievements include, but are not limited to: being a member of the American Medical Association; a member and delegate of the Texas Medical Association; President of Harris County Medical Society, East Harris Medical Society, Ninth District Medical Society, Baylor Medical Alumni Association, and Houston Academy of Medicine; Lifetime Vice President of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Founding Member of the International Club of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; Founding Member, CEO, and President of Gulf Coast Hospital; CEO of San Jacinto Methodist Hospital Family Practice Residency Program, Chairman and Board of Directors of the Department of Family Practice at San Jacinto and the Medical Director of Camp Wood Convalescent Medical Center.
The family was blessed with his presence and enduring strength this Christmas season. H.W. answered the Lord's call to come home in the early morning hours on December 27, 2015. His dedication, traits, and love are still shown through his wife, Charlotte. H.W.'s legacy lives on through his family and over the course of his lifetime, H.W. was blessed with six children: Hamilton Wright IV, Steven Earl, Gary Joe, Courtland O'Dell, Cody Ryan, and Geneva Angélle; his seven surviving grandchildren, Kevin Earl, Gary Kyle, Mary Francis, Mary Jo, Hamilton Wright V, Brooke Mckenzie, and Blythe Madison as well as his two great-grandchildren, Jaquelyn Lynn and Ryker Blaine. H.W. loved, cherished and frequently spoke highly of his closest lifelong friends.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Thursday, December 31, 2015, beginning at 1:00 p.m. with a Celebration of Life to follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at the Cedar Bayou Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery.
