Dr. David George Walker passed away on September 18, 2014 at his Baytown home of nearly 50 years, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Maria, brothers Fred and J.C, grandson Griff, and daughter in law Marie. He is survived by his second wife Conchita, stepson Jacob Shafer, his four sons David and his wife Denise, Fred and his wife BriAnne, Oscar and his wife Betsey, and Raymond and sisters Harriet Herns and Susan Poole. Also grandchildren Chris, Austin, Jonelle, Sydney, Will, Andrew, Blake, and George and great grandchildren, Leah and James.
Born and raised in Alpine, Texas, Dr. Walker served as a sergeant in the 11th Airborne division during World War II before earning a Ph. D in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Walker worked for many years as a research scientist in the petrochemical industry, and is the inventor or co-inventor of 16 U.S. patents. He also shared his vast knowledge as a Fullbright Scholar at the University of Oviedo (Spain) and as a professor at the University of Petroleum and Minerals (Saudi Arabia).
A voracious reader, David spent countless hours educating himself on many topics, including history, philosophy, science, and languages. He also believed in physical fitness, running and playing tennis regularly for most of his life. One of his favorite hobbies was working in his garden.
More than anything, David loved his family. From coaching youth sports and serving as a Scoutmaster for his sons, to family camping expeditions and reunions with extended family, David always made time to share memories and make new ones with the people he loved.
Dr. Walker's family will hold a memorial service at Navarre Funeral Home in Baytown this Sunday September 21. Visitation is from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., when the memorial service begins. Next Sunday September 28, his remains will be laid to rest in the family plot at Alpine at 10:00 a.m.
