Donald Maurice Findlay was a man of character and principle, a father, a husband, a brother, and grandfather. He never met a stranger. People fell in love with him as soon as they met him. Don believed in hard work and generosity. He was an authentic man that freely spoke of his love for others.
A devoted husband, he volunteered for Vietnam so that he would be able to choose his station upon completion of his tour of duty. He did this so that his wife and children could live in Okinawa with family while he served. He then requested duty in Okinawa for the next four years.
Upon retirement from the military, he was employed by Exxon Refinery for 15 years, at which point he retired and continued to reside in Baytown. He continued to live an active life, filled with travel and hobbies. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Rebecca Findlay and his brother-n-law, Jim Cooper. He is survived by his wife, Shizuko “Dee” Findlay of Baytown; sons, daughters, and spouse, William David and Terry Findlay of Columbia, SC, Riccardo and Brajann Findlay, Rob and Vanessa Findlay of Channelview, and Ricky and Angie Findlay of Baytown, Rhonda and Jeff Backer of Wayne, NE, and Regina and Leslie Meaders-Findlay of Austin; sisters and brother-in-law, Barbara Cooper of Valdosta, GA and Sue and Hal Stephenson of Willis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Virginia Findlay of Baytown, Frankie and Betty Findlay of Round Rock, and David and Alice Findlay of Baytown; and grandchildren, Joshua, Nieva, Brianna, Donnie, Stephany, Alissa, and Bryan Findlay and Jordan, Meagan, Hailey, Reagan, and Caiden Backer.
Serving as pallbearers will be Donnie Findlay, Jeff Backer, Joe Johnson, Harold Cross, Mike Torrence, and Scotty Cross. Honorary pallbearers will be Butch Johnson, Norman Cobb, and Rusty Daniels.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Keitha St. Clair officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery with military honors.
Don leaves a legacy that will eternally be imprinted in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
