David K. Rice, 54, of Dayton was born April 3, 1954 in Baytown and passed away Sunday, January 25, 2009. He was a 1972 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, where he was a National Merit Finalist his senior year and he attended Texas A & M University. He was a member of the Baptist faith and the NRA. He managed the DVA division of National Oilwell/Varco. An avid hunter, he belonged to several hunting organizations and had been the hunting lease manager for the Northrup/Pipe Creek Ranch for 26 years.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William J. and Nora Rice and Henry C. and Elvina ""Belle"" Schroeder; brother, Michael Lawrence Rice; and nephew, Donald P. Hamby. He is survived by his wife, Carol S. Rice of Dayton; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Anita Smith of Nixon and Kenny and Krystal Smith of Houston; parents, Gerald L. and Elaine S. Rice of Baytown; sisters, Anne C. Rice of Houston and Elizabeth Rice Davis and husband Ray of Lafitte, LA; grandchildren, Ryan and Kelsey Smith and Kalista and Kloey Smith; nieces & nephews, Rachel A. Davis of Houston, Cara E. Davis of Boulder, CO, Dean M. Davis of Houston, Art B. Davis of Hammond, LA, Autumn Hamby of Houston and Johnny Paul Hamby II of Pasadena; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Johnny and Polly Hamby and Lyndia and Clint Odom, all of Pasadena; uncle and aunt, Joe and Sue Hardee of Lovelady; and extended family and many, many friends.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Naron officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Creek Cemetery in Houston County near Austonio.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Kenny Smith, Dean M. Davis, David Smith, Ronnie Thomas, Todd Weiner, Marshall Cox and Johnny Paul Hamby II. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Rice, David Macaluso, Carl Gold, Ray Davis, Stuart Perry, Clint Odom, Johnny Hamby and Joe Hardee.
