"Mr. Marino was a native and resident of Baton Rouge, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving Children on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at the age of 90. He was a legendary man with a personality larger than life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be sorely missed. It was an honor to call you Dad! He was an outstanding role model for his children and all those that knew him He never met a stranger and his smile and humor lit up the room! He was a United States Navy veteran of WWII, a retired grocer, and cofounder of Marino Brothers Grocery, which he owned and operated for 47 years before retiring in 1992. He was also a member of Associated Grocers, Inc. for 40 years and he served on the Board as well as being Chairman of the Board for many terms. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4030. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, and served as Usher at the 4:00pm Mass. He was a member of the Grandsons of Italy and the American Italian Society. He was a member of American Legion Post 38. He also served on the Board of Directors of Reeve's Supermarket, and was a member of the Cavaliers Society. He is survived by his 6 children and their spouses: Mary Margaret Marino, Lawrence R. Marino and wife Paulette, Theresa M. Davenport and husband Michael, Samuel J. Marino, Jr. and wife Paula, Rose M. Westmoreland and husband Britt, and Gina M. Cox and husband Cordell; his 6 grandchildren and their spouses: Samuel J. "Trey" Marino III and wife Aimee, Lauren Kay and husband Shiraz, Jessica D. Miller and husband Jeffrey, Megan W. Copsey and husband Shawn, Kristen M. Yoho and husband Ryan, and Christina M. Cox; and his 8 great-grandchildren: Karrigan, Cross Joseph, Bradley, Catherine, Damon, Aubyn, Jett, and Ryan. He is also survived by his only sister Lena Mae Polite, who never missed a day without visiting him and loved him through his illness. He also survived by his longtime friend, Alice Parrino. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 ½ years, Mary M. Marino; his parents, Lawrence and Mary Marino; and his brother, Joseph M. Marino. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd, on Monday, March 6, 2017, from 5pm until 8pm. Visiting will resume at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 12424 Brogdon Lane, on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, from 1:30pm until Mass of Christian Burial at 3pm, celebrated by Rev. Matt Dupre. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Serving as Pallbearers will be Russell Marino, Ryan C. Yoho, Shawn R. Copsey, Jeffrey A. Miller, Thomas Mackey, and Joe Salpietra, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers are Samuel J. "Trey" Marino III, Lawrence "Sonny" Marino, Don Blue, David Hodgeson, Greg Smith, Mayor Kip Holden, Bradley Michael Kay, Ronald Salpietra, Donald Salpietra, Steve Lastrapes, Anthony Giroir, Joe Michael Marino, James Kent, Ronnie Whiddon, Thomas Marino, John Marino, members of the Board of Directors of Reeve's Supermarket, and ushers at the 4:00pm Vigil Mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Special Thanks are expressed to the staff at Notre Dame Hospice, namely Camille, Garnett, Suzie, Jill, Lucreta and Chaplain Tom; Father Matt Dupree and Deacon Pete Walsh, the caregivers of Crystal Rose: Fannie, Barbara and Ashley; the Boys in Blue from District 1 (through the "˜80s and "˜90s); Dr. Gerald Barber; and Dr. Mary Raven.
