Ruth Sturges Fidler Burns was a native of Massillon, Ohio, a longtime resident of Westover Plantation in Port Allen until moving to Prairieville upon retirement. She was born December 3, 1921 and died peacefully at her home Thursday, October 29 from congestive heart failure. She was 93.
She is survived by her sons, Tom Burns (Lori), Tim Burns (Lorri); daughters, Linda Vallet, Barbara May (Ray), Karen Thompson (Ken), Debra Lockwood (Al) and Denise Burns; 17 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Preceded in death by her husbands, Roy Fidler, who was killed during WWII, and Elmore “Blutch” Burns; son, Robert Michael Burns; parents, Thomas and Ellen Sturges; sisters, Leona, Helen and Margaret Sturges and Lois Nestor; and brothers, Thomas, James, Frank and Walter Sturges.
She was a foster mother for Catholic Life Services for over 10 years caring for over 100 babies thoughout the adoption process, as well as providing a home for several unwed mothers. She and her husband were recognized for these efforts by Bishop Stanley Ott in 1988.
Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Monday, November 2, 2015 from 9:00am until the funeral service begins at 10:00am, officiated by Rev. Jerry Martin. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
