Katie Nell Bond Morgan passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 105 in Baton Rouge on Friday, February 23, 2024, with her son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Pam Morgan, at her side. She was born on September 4, 1918 in Georgeville, St. Helena Parish, Louisiana and resided most of her life in Baton Rouge, LA. For the last 13 years she lived with her son and daughter-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Houston Morgan, Jr.; parents, Charles S. and Georgia Bond; her sister, Helen Pettiss and brother, George S. Bond. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James H. (Chuck) Morgan, Ill and Pam Morgan; her nieces, Mary Lynn Jackson and Jacqueline Bond Juneau; and nephew, Robert Bond; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
She was married to Houston Morgan, the love of her life, on July 25, 1937, and they spent 73 years together before his death in 2010.
She was a graduate of Hammond High School, attended La. Tech University and graduated from Southeastern La. College and received her Master's Degree from L.S.U. She was an educator and a teacher and was the first Principal of Cedarcrest Southmoor Elementary School. She began her career as a teacher in St. Helena Parish and taught for 3 years during World War II at Camp LeJeune Marine Elementary School in North Carolina. She also taught at Bernard Terrace Elementary, North Highlands Elementary and Jefferson Terrace Elementary Schools in East Baton Rouge Parish.
She was named Baton Rouge Teacher of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce in 1967 and was elected as the first woman President of the La. Principal's Association in 1972. She was a member of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Zeta Sorority, a life member of National Education Association, and Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teacher Sorority.
She was a long-time faithful member of the Broadmoor Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Department Director and Deacon.
She was truly a member of the greatest generation. She touched the lives of many as their teacher and principal and believed that a teacher must be a friend, philosopher and guide to her students; the greatest of these as friend.
She will be remembered for her devout faith, beautiful smile, kind words and love for all her friends and family.
Special thanks go to friend, Judy Miller; niece, Mary Lynn Jackson; cousin, Vicki Rambin; and to all of the wonderful caretakers of Audubon Hospice: Yolanda Warren, Bernice Jones, Renee Melvin, Sonya Jackson, Becca Babin and especially Sidney Joffrion, whose gentle care and love helped us all through Kate's final days.
Visitation will be at Broadmoor Baptist Church, 9755 Goodwood Boulevard, Baton Rouge, LA 70815, on Thursday, February 29, 2024, from 10:00 am until funeral service at 12:00 pm. Services will be officiated by ministers, Dr. Leonard Ezell and Bobby Rayburn. Serving as Pallbearers will be: Ken Shaw, Carey Jackson, Donald Juneau, Daniel Jackson, Ronald Seale, and Jim Babington. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park Mausoleum.
