He is survived by his wife, Karen; his three children, David, Peyton, and Joel; two stepchildren, Bo and Marisa; sisters, Margie and Dannie; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was born on October 2, 1942 in Fairview Alpha, Louisiana. Growing up in the country he was known as Oquin. He graduated from Fairview Alpha high school as salutatorian of his class of seven. In 1964 he graduated from Northwestern State College with a Bachelor of Science, and in 1966 a Master of Science in Education. He taught industrial arts in Tampa, Fl and Orange, CA.
While there he took graduate education classes at California State University, Long Beach and Pepperdine University. In 1977 he earned a Doctor of Education from the University of Arkansas. He returned to Baton Rouge and for seven years was a State Supervisor of Education for the La. Department of Education. In 1977 he left the Department of Education to be a lobbyist for the Louisiana State Legislature. For twelve years he lobbied for different groups. He organized the Louisiana Aggregates and Concrete Association and was the executive director. In 1998 he owned and managed Baton Rouge College, a court reporting and parallel school. He retired in 2008. He enjoyed sailing his boat, April Song. He and his friends participated in many races, including one to Havana, Cuba. He enjoyed living in the French Quarter and being the "Grand Puba" of The Grande and Secrete Order of Obituary Cocktail for twelve years. He also enjoyed his home in Guanajuato, MX.
