Henry Karl Schott passed away Friday evening, Oct. 5, 2007, at the Butterfly Wing of Ollie Steele Burden Manor in Baton Rouge following a brief battle with cancer. Born Heinrich Karl Schott on Oct. 19, 1919, in Harleshausen, now Kassel, Germany, he and his parents moved to the United States in 1927 and settled in Elizabeth, N.J. Schott earned his bachelor of civil engineering degree from Newark College of Engineering, now New Jersey Institute of Technology. In January 1943, Schott married Elsie Fraatz. Schott was employed by Parsons, Brinkerhoff, Quade and Douglas engineering firm in New York City. In 1959, the company transferred him and his family to Baton Rouge where his professional life included tenures with the city-parish and in the private sector. After private practice, Schott rejoined the city as a subdivision engineer and retired in 1984 as chief engineer. Schott was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Ullrich Schott and Karl Schott. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Elsie Fraatz Schott; son and daughter-in-law, Henry Charles Schott and Deborah Conrad Schott, of Baton Rouge; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Schott Alexy and Thomas Christopher Alexy, of Jacksonville, Ala.; and son and daughter-in-law, Martin Alan Schott and Margaret Lawhon Schott, of Baton Rouge. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Henry Charles Schott Jr. and wife Deborah Elting Schott, of Barksdale Air Force Base, Heather Schott LeBlanc and husband Chris James LeBlanc, of Baton Rouge, Thomas Christopher Alexy Jr., of Huntsville, Ala., Kristin Michelle Alexy, of Coronado, Calif., and Jeffrey Kyle Alexy, of Auburn, Ala.; seven great-grandchildren, Christian Avery, Daniel Joseph, Matthew James, Rachel Lauren and Sarah Nicole Schott, and Logan Conrad and Megan Grace LeBlanc. Schott was a 48-year member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served in a number of capacities including Sunday school teacher, superintendent of Sunday school, president of the church council, head usher and greeter. Schott was a lifetime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Louisiana Engineering Society. He was a tennis player, an avid sports fan and a devoted husband, father, family leader and friend to many. Visitation will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church, corner of Tara Boulevard and Old Hammond Highway, on Monday, Oct. 8, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m., conducted by Stanley Eckermann, pastor, with special music by bagpiper Rosemary John. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Henry Charles Schott Jr., Thomas Christopher Alexy Jr., Jeffrey Kyle Alexy and Chris James LeBlanc, nephew, Mark K. Keitel, and Leslie L. McMorris. Honorary pallbearers are Stewart Falcon, Thomas G. Jones Jr., M.D., James Keisler and William R. Wolf.
