Harry E. ‘Pete’Harry E. “Pete” Hughes, 85, died at home Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, a lifelong resident of Zachary and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He was born to Otey Marvin and Julie Richard Hughes on Oct. 22, 1926, in Lutcher. As a very young man, he finished Zachary High School a year early to join his two older brothers to serve and defend this country as a Merchant Marine in World War II. Following that, he went on to serve in the Korean War. Following Korea, he returned and met the love of his life, Florence Deslatte. They soon married and began their long life together-raising four children and becoming affectionately known to everyone as Pete and Mike-when you saw or spoke to one of them-you knew that the other was close and they were together. Most of his working life was spent in the car business with Nelson and East
Ford before eventually retiring from Superior Ford. He then spent the bulk of his retirement years following all of his grandchildren around in all of their activities and as a member of Fennwood Hills Country Club, At Fennwood, he enjoyed life and golf as much as anyone could hope for with friends that he felt and treated as his extended family. Survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Florence “Mike” Hughes and their four children, Dean and Kathy Hughes, of Hammond, Dale and Ginger Hughes and Marty and Elaine Hughes, of Zachary, and Jan and Chip Troxclair, of Houston; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Hughes and wife Elaine, of Baton Rouge; and sister-in-law, Josephine, also of Baton Rouge. Preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Hughes. Visitation at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Zachary, on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. until a rosary at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Following the Mass, there will be a reception in the church hall for all family and friends.
