Elaine “Lainie” LeBas Hauler, 73, died Wednesday, May 31, 2023. She is survived by her husband, John Hauler, and daughter, Shannon Hauler. A New Orleans native, Lainie grew up in Arabi and lived in Chalmette and New Orleans. Following Hurricane Katrina, Lainie moved to Baton Rouge, where she lived until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elaine Pomes LeBas. Lainie is survived by her siblings: John LeBas, Jr. (Ellen); Robert LeBas (Tina); Julie L. Taraba (Daryl); and Michelle L. Bowen (Tim). She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Cindy LeBas, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends. A graduate of Annunciation High School in New Orleans and Nicholls State University, Lainie taught in St. Bernard Parish Schools for 32 years, primarily teaching kindergarten for 31 years at J.F. Gauthier Elementary. A devout Catholic, Lainie was a former parishioner of St. Louise de Marillac (Arabi), St. Frances Cabrini (New Orleans), and St. Thomas More (Baton Rouge) and current parishioner of St. Jean Vianney (Baton Rouge). She was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary from the early 1980s until the present as well as with Right-to-Life programs in both New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Additionally, she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society for women educators, for much of her life. Known for her kindness and generosity, Lainie will be missed by many. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Baton Rouge General Hospital and Baton Rouge General Rehab Hospital for taking such great care of Lainie. Visitation will take place Thursday, June 8, from 6-8 p.m. at Rabenhorst East Funeral Home, Baton Rouge, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday, June 10, from 12:15 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Schoen’s Funeral Home in New Orleans. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 1:45 followed by interment at St. Louis No 3 cemetery. Masses preferred in lieu of flowers.
