Donald L. Thompson, Jr., a native of New Jersey and a resident of French Settlement, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 29, 2024, at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Melissa C. Thompson; three sons: Charles F., Douglas W., and Benjamin H. Thompson; unofficially adopted daughter, Erin Oberhaus; daughters-in-law: Meagan and Dot; grandsons: Cooper, Brennan, Max, and Luke; and granddaughters: Taylor, Caitlin, Haleigh, Lily, Amelia, and Peyton. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Lohmeyer; a nephew, Charlie Lohmeyer; a niece, Bethany Lohmeyer; aunt and uncle, Larry and Dee Thompson; grand-niece, Megan Rose; and grand-nephew, Jeremy. After completing his post-doctoral research at Johns Hopkins, he began his career at LSU in the School of Animal Science in 1980, retiring after 39 years as a research professor. Known affectionately as DT, he mentored many graduate students, encouraging them to seek the truth and strive for excellence. He made numerous contributions to the field of equine science, especially in endocrinology and reproductive physiology.
