Carolyn Blanchard Landry

A native of Napoleonville and a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, Carolyn spent the last eight years of her life with her daughter, Fran, in Columbus, Ohio. She was born on May 14, 1926 and died on March 28, 2014 at the age of 87. Visiting at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 2250 Main Street, Baton Rouge, LA on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 9:30 am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am. Internment in Green Oaks Memorial Park.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Kenneth Charles Landry, an infant daughter, Mary Frances, her parents, William and Mabel Blanchard, a brother and sister-in-law, W.P. and June Blanchard, two nephews, Mark and Roger Blanchard, and a great nephew, Stephen Blanchard. She is survived by five daughters, Denise and husband Larry Hyde of Corpus Christi, TX, Jan and husband Dale Bienvenu of Jarreau, LA, Fran Landry of Columbus, OH, Sue and husband Brad Cromley of Little Rock, AR and Julie and husband Dave Martin of Houston, TX, a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Richard and Patricia Blanchard of Monroe, LA and numerous nieces and nephews. She was very proud of her six grandchildren, Katie, Anna and Kristen Cromley and David, Michael and Jennifer Martin.  Carolyn graduated from LSU with a BS and MS in home economics. She worked as an extension agent in Ascension and St. John parishes, in New Orleans for General Electric when Ken was completing his studies in architecture at Tulane and in Baton Rouge for Gulf States when Ken joined the firm of Bodman and Murrell. During the early sixties, when Ken was on the staff of the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC, she worked at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. Her longest employment, and a most cherished one, was at St. Joseph's Academy, where she taught for 35 years. It was a privilege to work with the sisters"”Joan, Carolyn, Judith, Claire Germaine, Adelaide, Adele, Agatha, Dorothy, Eugenie, Jane, Jean, Kathleen, Maria, Mila, Mary Agnes, Ursula and dear Sister Felix, with whom she visited many days in the convent building. The lay faculty was also very special. She and Lindsay Rougon became and remained the best of friends, working together in their department of home economics.  She was a member of Pi Beta Phi, Mortar Board, Phi Upsilon Omicron and other honorary groups. Perhaps her greatest "claim to fame" was serving as co-editor of the firstRiver Road Recipesduring her years in the Junior League of Baton Rouge. This enjoyable assignment enhanced her love of cooking, and one of her fondest memories was making crawfish bisque annually with her dear friend, Janie Couvillon. Ken was a member of Rotary Club, and both he and Carolyn were Paul Harris Fellows.  The family wishes to extend very special thanks to Carolyn's caregiver of three years and "honorary daughter," Sandy Ratliff of Columbus, OH. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and sons-in-law.
