August “Fred” Frey, Jr., passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, in Sanford, FL. A Baton Rouge, LA native and graduate of Denham Springs High School, he was a proud U.S. veteran and served aboard the USS Yorktown. He earned a Master of Journalism degree from LSU. Fred enjoyed a 25-year career in broadcasting that included employment as producer-director at WAFB-TV, radio-tv coordinator and instructor at Nichols State University Thibodaux, executive director of the Louisiana Educational Television Authority (LETA), president and general manager of educational of Educational Television of Houston (subsidiary of Houston Baptist University) and served as an evening instructor of mass communication at Southern University. His proudest career accomplishment came during his employment with LETA, now known as Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB), where he was privileged and proud to lead a staff that acquired the sites, funding and put six LPB network stations on the air. He and his staff were also instrumental in the funding, site and design of the current LPB headquarters in Baton Rouge. Fred also served as treasurer, vice chairman and chairman of the board of directors on Southern Educational Communications Association in Columbia, S.C. After his broadcasting career, he embarked on a successful career as a realtor and co-owner of Alpha Properties and Fred Frey & Associates. After his real estate career, he returned to public service and retired in 2007, as director of administration for the Louisiana Office of Group Benefits. Fred was an avid LSU fan. Fred is survived by his children, Sheri Kaye Frey Melton, (Craig) and David Todd Frey, (Kay); grandchildren, Piper Melton of Sanford, FL, and Jacob and Anna Frey of Mooresville, NC.; sister, Addie Lucille “Lulu” Higginbotham; best friend, Carolyn Eirick Frey of Baton Rouge, LA. He is preceded in death by his parents, August Fred Frey, Sr. and Helen Lucille Hodges Frey. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA, on Thursday, December 29, from 12:00pm until the time of funeral services at 2pm.
