Obituary of Reuben Woodrow Stone Sr.
Reuben Woodrow Stone, 100, of Collinsville, VA, went home to the Lord, Friday, May 20, 2016. He was born Aug. 26, 1915 in War Eagle, WV to the late Silas and Ruth Elizabeth Stone. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Catherine Duncan Stone; a daughter, Sherry Marlowe; brother, Grady Stone; and sisters, Nellie Bowles, Gladys Stone, and Clarice Hazelwood. Reuben spent his childhood in Mill Creek, Henry, VA and later owned service stations in Stanleytown. In 1943, he was drafted into the Army and became a Staff Sergeant in the 39th Signal Corp. During World War II, he served in the European Theater of Operations and was stationed in England, Holland, Belgium, Germany, and France. He received an Honorable Discharge from Company C, 111th Engineer Combat Battalion, Fort Meade, MD, in 1945. He returned to Henry Co. and ran the Esso Service Station in Stanleytown until he retired. He was in the service station business for a total of 44 years. He was an avid golfer until he was 96 and had been a member of the Bassett Country Club for 62 years. He was a charter member of the Stanleytown Ruritan Club, a 52 year member of the Scottish Rite Masons in Bassett, and a member of the Smith Memorial United Methodist Church for 60 years. He is survived by a son, Reuben “Ricky” Stone, Jr. and wife, Deirdre “Dee Dee”; one sister, Viola Cannady; sister-in-law, Marie Stone; two grandchildren, Jay Marlowe (Kim) and Mendy Spadaro (Doug); four great-grandchildren, Michael and Benjamin Spadaro, and Dillon and Josie Marlow; son-in-law, Jerry Marlowe. Reuben was affectionately known as Sugar Pop to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was greatly loved and will be missed. The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Home from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2016 and 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2016 at Smith Memorial UMC. A celebration of Life service will be held at Smith Memorial UMC, at the corner of Daniels Creek Rd. and John Redd Blvd., at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2016. Rev. Kameron Wilds will be officiating. Interment will be at Roselawn Burial Park with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Smith Memorial UMC, P.O.
