Luetta McAlexander Harris

Luetta McAlexander Harris, 90, of Stuart, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 19, 2015 at Pioneer Hospital in Stuart. She was born in Patrick County, June 10, 1924 to Zera C. McAlexander and Martha Daisy Hall McAlexander. She retired from Bassett-Walker Knitting and was a member of Valley Drive Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, canning and working with her flowers. She especially loved family reunions and “get togethers” at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was so thankful for her many friends and neighbors, her caregivers and staff at Landmark Center for 9 years and for the past 3 1/2 years at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart to whom she was so dependent for her care.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Esmond G. Harris who died in 1993; one sister, Gladys Roberts and two brothers, Alvis L. McAlexander and William Douglas McAlexander.

Surviving are her six children: four daughters, Shirley Goad and husband Ray of Keeling, VA, Margaret Lawson and husband Dean of Bassett, Jean Shorter and husband George of Bassett, Jane Hawks and husband Larry of Ridgeway; two sons, James Harris and wife Helen of Patrick Springs, Tommy Harris and wife Donna of Bassett; two brothers, Calvin McAlexander of Ashland, VA and Cleo McAlexander of Bassett. Her eight grandchildren were the pride of her life: Deana Witt, Patrick Hawks, Brad Harris, Brittany Hawks, Jane Goad, Karen Kendrick, Leslie Shorter and Richard Shorter. Her six wonderful great-grandchildren are Charlotte, Cameron, Autumn, Olivia, Aaden and Zoe. Many beloved nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 21, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett and other times at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Donna Harris, 229, Dalewood Drive, Bassett, VA.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Valley Drive Baptist Church in Fieldale at 11:00 a.m. by Pastor Bobby Rakes.

Burial will follow at Overlook Cemetery in Eden, NC.

Arrangements are by Collins Funeral Home in Bassett.
