Obituary of Louise Smith Stone
Louise Smith Stone, 90, of Bassett, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015 at her home with her children at her bedside. She was born in Stoneville, NC on May 24, 1925 to Joshua Ruffin Smith and Hallie Mae Brown Smith. Upon graduation from Stoneville High School she moved to Martinsville to work and live with her sisters during WWII. In Martinsville she met and married the love of her life, Vernon, with whom she would have celebrated 70 years this year. Louise and Vernon lived in Bassett where they raised their three children. She retired from Bassett Post Office with 33 years of service. She was a member of the Town and Country Garden Club in Bassett for over 50 years serving in various officer capacities. She was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary doing her duty selling poppies every year and visiting the disabled veterans in Salem VA Hospital. She was a 70 year member of the Fort Trial Christian Church in Bassett where she and Vernon took and active and supportive role. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Cecil, Beverly, Oscar, Garland and Preston (Pete) Smith and four sisters, Zelma Price, Mary Lee Anglin, Iris Joyce and Nancy Stanley. Surviving are husband, Vernon L. Stone, Sr. of the home, children, V. Leon Stone, Jr. of N. Charleston, SC, Michael D. Stone (Kathy) of Williamsburg, VA, and Sylvia S. Robertson (Donnie) of Bassett, VA. Also surviving are grandchildren, Melody R. Weigel (Travis) of Jacksonville, AR, Jeff Stone of Williamsburg, VA, Kim S. Smith of Cary, NC and Doug Stone of Sevierville, TN, two great-granddaughters, Jessica and Erin Smith of Cary, NC, sisters, Pauline S. Joyce of Spencer, VA, Dorothy S. Shaw of Greensboro, NC and Ruby S. Wright of Collinsville, VA and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would also like to recognize her two special friends, Vickie Craig and Michelle Shively who gave our mother dedicated service and friendship. The funeral service will be held Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Fort Trial Christian Church with Lawrence Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fort Trial Christian Church, 6356 Virginia Avenue, Bassett, VA 24055.
