Obituary of Glenda Rakes Tuggle
Mrs. Glenda Rakes Tuggle, age 89, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 23, 2024 at the Tender Years Adult Care, 2785 Figsboro Road, Martinsville, Virginia. Mrs. Tuggle was born at 982 Chestnut Street in Fieldale, she was the daughter of the late Melvin Guy Rakes and the late Elizabeth Bradley Rakes. She grew up in Fieldale and the Rangeley Community and was a member of the graduating class of 1952 of Fieldale High School. It was there, accompanied by her friend Shirley Vaughn, that she met her husband of 58 years, the late Paul A. Tuggle, when she sold him a ticket to a Donkey Baseball Game that her class was sponsoring as a fund raiser. Glenda worked many years in a variety of jobs beginning with serving sodas at Joyce’s Drug Store. She later won several sales awards as a Tupperware dealer and did tax preparation and as well as being a homemaker and caregiver to several relatives. She was a member of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Ester Circle. She enjoyed raising a garden and canning the bounty she received from her and her families efforts. She and her family enjoyed camping trips to the beach and the mountains and in later years monthly lunch dates with her high school classmates. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Geraldine (Geri) Smith and Carolyn R. Carter as well as an infant sister, her brother, Harold D. Rakes, nephews, Thaddeus Smith and Sam Rakes, a great niece, Browyn Smith. Surviving are her sons, James R. (Bob) Tuggle (Truman) and Dwayne P. Tuggle (Teresa), two granddaughters, Ashley Tuggle (Christle) and Amber Tuggle; two grandsons, James (Jay) Tuggle (Samantha) and Matthew Tuggle, sister-in-law, Vergie V, Rakes and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and her beloved dog, Scooter. A visitation will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Hwy, Bassett. VA with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 PM with Rev. Dr. J.D. Harmon officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. The family suggest donations to be made to the Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, 63 Mt Bethel Church Circle, Martinsville, VA 245112.
