Donna Thomas Shields

Donna Thomas Shields, 72, passed peacefully on September 7, 2024 and is now rejoicing with Jesus and her dearly missed loved ones. She was born October 27, 1951 in Martinsville, Virginia to Chester Yeatts Thomas and Evelyn Reid Thomas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her in-laws, Ruth and Damon Shields, husband William (Bill) Shields, nephew Trai Shields, her son William (Billy) Shields, her sister Janet Sharp, and her brother Dale Thomas. She is survived by her loving family: Stacy Thomas (Sonya & their children Ryan Thomas (Ruby), Ethan Thomas, and Tori Roach (Kevin & their children Taylor, Stella, and Jack Henry), Hope Lambert (Mark & their daughter Mattie), Todd Cox (April), Tara Claybrook (Daniel & their children Reece and Kendall), Everett Shields (Tim Moore and Michelle Shields and their family), and one very important friend, Genell Brown. She had many dear and close friends but Genell was her rock, and that there was no way she could have made it through these last four years after losing her son and husband without her by her side. Last, but most importantly her loving furry companion, Precious, who made the days easier to endure, who not to mention was also spoiled rotten. Donna was deeply committed to Pleasant Grove Christian Church, where she not only served on the board but also lent her voice to the choir, sharing her love for music and spirituality with the congregation. Her dedication to reading the Bible for at least thirty minutes each day and her regular viewership of Joyce Meyers' programs highlight her faith and love for spiritual guidance. It is also important not to forget that she enjoyed unwinding by watching her “stories”, which brought her comfort and relaxation before bedtime. Donna had a great passion for the beach and travelling, and took great joy in celebrating holidays and accomplishments with her family. Donna valued family and loved her family dearly. She was lifted up by her community at the Osborne Baptist Grief and Share group. Her retirement from Henry County Public Schools was marked by the lasting friendships she formed. A celebration of life will be held at Pleasant Grove Christian Church on Sunday, September 15 at 1:00pm, followed by a private graveside service for family.
