I am his only granddaughter. He was my only actual grandpa figure in my life. I would go to his house every day after school. Every summer he would take me to the YMCA and I would have swimming lessons. I remember going to the farm parties and we would hang out in and out side and dance and talk and eat until we count do it anymore. He was always there if I needed someone to talk to or if I ever just wanted a hug. Every report card I remember running in his house and showing him and getting the biggest hug you could ever get from any one human being. Then he would always tell nana to go get his wallet and bring it in there. He would pull out the big five dollars and I would be so happy. He got me my first bike for Christmas. I remember one time when I went to Carver and he took me into his office. Everyone just lit up and asked me if this was the famous Catiebug. I walked into his office and it was covered of pictures of me. I walked in one year of graduation with him. We walked across the grass field at Bassett and watched everyone get their diploma. He will always be apart of my life. I always think about his. Every day I think about what he's doing up in heaven. Every day he's probably up there fishing and just in his happy place. I love him so much and its so sad that he's gone. Tomorrow will be the two year mark and it feels like yesterday that I would right beside you in the hospital bed crying my eyes out because I didn't want you to leave me. That will always be the worst day of my life. I know your in a better place and I know your probably looking down on me typing this going crazy because you can't see me. But know papa that I love you with all my heart and I am so excited to see you again some day. I love you papa. From his only granddaughter Caitiebug

Danny will surely be missed here at AMVETS Post 35. He was an asset to the Club as well as to it's members. As a past Commander of Post 35 I will miss his  comaraderie but most of all , his friendly smile! Hooah brother..RIP

Mr. C. was one in a million. They years I worked for him were simply great. He knew and cared about everyone. There is no way to count the lives he touched. I count myself lucky to have known him. My sympathy and prayers are with the family,

Enjoyed Danny as a friend growing up, attending BHS , even riding the bus together. Nice hearing all the positive life changing impacts he made on so many in such a short time. Know he'll be missed. Condolences to the family at your loss.

My best years of teaching occurred when Mr. C was my principal.  He empowered his teachers to be their best and led without intimidation.  I learned so much from him.  What an awesome man!

Gloria Hairston...Danny's 7th grade teacher at Bassett Middle School,Jewell Jones,retired  Director of Elementary Education ,and Jean Hairston,retired English and Foreign Language curriculum specialist,all are truly saddened by the passing of Danny Cannaday,a very dedicated  and special gentleman and an outstanding and caring educator.Thank you for sharing him with us and the students of Henry County.

We were devastated to hear the news of Danny passing.  He was a man I was honored to know even though we had not talked in the last 50+ years. He never fully realized just how many lives he touched.

We met in the third grade at Campbell Court Elementary School, and his presence impacted our entire class. He planted seeds of wisdom fifty years ago in our hearts, and those seeds are still bearing fruit to this day.

 A class of innocent third grade kids daily counting the hours and minutes to the final bell. Campbell Court Elementary School taught us academics.  Danny taught us the importance of sacrifice and compassion in life. We learned that to experience JOY in life, you must put Jesus first, Others next, and Yourself last.

He was a leader and even as a young boy, he put others first. A leader always gives up more than the people he/she leads. And, Danny made countless sacrifices for humanity trying to offer each person the encouragement and skills to reach for the sky.

Live each moment to the fullest.  

One sunny morning sitting in that third grade class, my imagination gained full control of my consciousness, and I was touring Lakeside Amusement Park.
Suddenly, I was shaken by a classmate back into reality. To my surprise, the teacher was not teaching from the horrible arithmetic book, but was announcing the arrival of important guests all the way from England.  Wow! This was better than Lakeside!

Mr. Cannaday was such a sweet person and his loss really breaks my heart. He was my principal for many years at Fieldale Elementary and I always enjoyed going to see his smiling face. He was definitely an inspiration and will truly be missed. My deepest sympathy goes out for his family in this time.

Third grade arithmetic boredom raced from our class as the Campbell Court Beatles all the way from England came on stage performing the The Beatles Greatest Hits. The third graders lived each and every moment to the fullest during that concert!
Remember: Live each moment to the fullest! 
When you fall, get back up.  When you are up, reach down to help the oppressed, the downtrodden, and the marginalized.
Life is filled with thousands upon thousands of moments. Live each one to the fullest because once they are gone, you can't get them back.
Thank you, Danny, for letting me be among your moments.

Danny was a great guy and a wonderful principal for my children at Fieldale Elementary.  He used to come by and hang out at my shop, Boot Hill Gun and Tackle.  He loved fishing and hunting, but he loved his family a lot more.  He talked about them with me several times, you could always tell how proud he was of them.  I will miss him as a friend and will be praying for his family.

Mr. Cannaday made such a huge impact on my education, and he has always been someone to look up to in my life. My deepest apologies go out to the family, and our prayers are with you.

Danny and I were roommates for two years while at Elon. I was from Pennsylvania at the time and he often picked at me about my "Yankee" ways. But me and the good 'ol southern boy from Bassett,Va. got along great. He was a good friend and roommate who would have done anything for me. I have many fond memories of our time at Elon. My thoughts and prayers to JoAnn and the rest of the family. He will be missed.

So shocked to hear of Danny's passing.  He was an awesome person and my 2 sons thought a lot of him. He was a good man.  I remember roaming the halls of Bassett High School with him and other friends. Thoughts and prayers to JoAnn, John and the rest of the family.  He will be missed.

I was in school with Danny from grade school through graduation at BHS. I always liked Danny and considered him a good friend. My sincerest sympathy goes out to his family & loved ones. I know he will be dearly missed. Betsy White DuBois (Fayetteville, NC)

You have my deepest thoughts and prayers to the family. My grandson was a student at Carver Elementary and he was the Principal. Honest and fair. He will be remember for all the good he did.

Danny was a unique person with wonderful knowledge and advice for educators, administrators, and students alike. Mostly because he had done it all! His spirit of liveliness, respect and fun lives on in so many students, faculty, and staff that he worked with here in Henry County.  He will truly be missed, and fondly remembered.

The best boss ever. You will be greatly missed. I hope you can sing George Jones songs in Heaven.  My sympathy to your family.  I so enjoyed working with you.
