He was born to the late James Pickens, Sr. and Lessie Pickens on March 25th, 1943 in Jackson, Tennessee. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant sister; and his brother, Don Pickens.
Jim started his career with the Memphis Police Department in 1970 in patrol. He served in multiple divisions throughout the years. But most notably was the Mounted Patrol. His love of horses took him to the national police competitions and to train multiple agencies across the state. He even wrote multiple manuals used in departments today. After serving with the Memphis Police Department, he served as a special deputy with the United States Marshal Service for the next 11 years before finally retiring. He never met a stranger and knew everyone. Jim was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be sorely missed by all who loved and knew him.
Jim is survived by his wife of 48 years, Beverly G. Pickens; his son James “Jay” Pickens, III and his wife Megan; daughter Stephanie Norris and her fiancé Ian Walsh; grandchildren, Lily Beth Norris, Hutch Norris, Zoe Pickens; his brother, Gary Pickens and his wife Paula; and his sister-in-law, Sandra Pickens.
Family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday, December 19th at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd, Bartlett, TN.
