O’Neill, George Kutzner entered eternal life on July 29, 2021 at the age of 97, resident of Tennessee for over 25 years, beloved husband for 57 years of the late Dorothy Carter Martindale O’Neill. loving step-father of the late Daniel (Susan) G. Martindale, father of Patricia A. (Marvin) Frost and Nanci C. O'Neill (Edmund) Lima; grandfather of 12 and great grandfather of 25, dear brother of the late Lydia F. (William) Young; and Ruth E. (Jesse) Simcox and late grandson Harley L. Lima and other relatives and caring friends. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church serving it in many capacities thru the years. In Bartlett he was a member of the Official Board and the Builders Sunday School Class.
George K. O’Neill was born January 20, 1924 in Doniphan, Missouri, the son of Robert A. and Mabel Kutzner O’Neill. He grew up in Doniphan where he attended school—graduating high school in 1942. He enlisted in the navy and was called to active duty on December 31, 1942 and was discharged January 21, 1946. His service was in the Pacific Area having been involved in the liberation of the Marianas Islands. After discharge from the navy he graduated from the University of Missouri as a Mechanical Engineer. He held Professional Engineers Licenses in Missouri, Ohio, Georgia and Mississippi and was a member of the Project Management Institute and the Cost Engineering Society.
His first position after graduation was in Corinth, Mississippi where he met and married Dorothy (Carter) Martindale, daughter of John R. and Effie (Mullins) Carter.
In 1969 he was hired by the Weyerhaeuser Company to manage the design and construction of a large paper mill in Valliant, Oklahoma. Before retiring December 31, 1989 he managed the design and installation of four large paper machines and numerous smaller projects. In 1985 he was given the Weyerhaeuser Presidents Award for the design of a minimum cost large capacity Kraft paper mill and in 1988 was selected as part of a four member team to present a seminar on wood products and the facilities to process them to the Ministry of Forestry of the Chinese Government in Beijing.
George and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and visited many countries in Europe, Australia twice, Japan, and China, 49 of the 50 states and lived in Canada two different times. They moved from their long time home in Tacoma, Washington to Tennessee in December 1996.
The family will receive friends for George on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, August 11, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133. A committal service will occur Wednesday, August 11, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 2:20 PM at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forest Hill Irene Rd, Memphis, TN 38125.
