Elores Liggans Weathers

Elores (affectionately called “Pat”) Liggans Weathers was the only daughter born to Patsy White and Claude Liggans. She arrived on the 23rd day of October 1937 in Port Gibson, Mississippi. Elores had one brother, William Barnes.

In 1955, Elores met Vernon Jackson Weathers who was in the U.S. Army and stationed in Port Gibson. They married in 1956. Vernon then received orders to Fort Benning, Georgia. This was the beginning of Elores’ travels with him, to international and stateside locations, which included Fort Irwin Army Base in California, outside of Barstow. After Vernon separated from the Army, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri for less than a year. In 1964, they returned to California and decided that Barstow would become home, and for the next 60 years, it would be the home of Elores.

Elores and Vernon had seven children: Keith, Erwin, Monica, Patricia, Charles “Vernon,” and twins Stephanie and Stephen. She loved her family! Her initial goal in life was to be a good wife and mother, at which she was tremendously successful. Elores believed that children should be respectful and productive and she imparted these values to her children. She participated in all of their activities at their schools and in church. While the children were in elementary school, Elores was “Room Mother,” taking on the duties of baking goods for various activities, attending school programs, and assisting in other extra-curricular activities her children participated in. The same was true with church activities at East Barstow Southern Baptist Church (now named Revived Community Church) where she was a Sunday School Teacher, taught during Vacation Bible School, and participated in girls and boys’ clubs activities. Elores was always active with her children, supported her children, and willingly assisted with a smile.

Although independence was not her priority, following her divorce in 1976, Elores rose to the occasion while continuing to raise her remaining minor children. Having completed her high school education, Elores secured her Associates of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Development from Barstow Community College. She began her career at Barstow Christian School as a Preschool Teacher where she taught, tutored, mentored, and was even a mother figure for many of the children. Elores loved working with children and, after raising her own, she became a Foster Care Parent while she continued her employment at the school. She became as attached to the children as they did to her. At times she found her life to be challenging but remained steadfast, knowing that giving up was not an option.

Elores was also very active in her community. She was an active member of the local Barstow NAACP and served on committees until she was no longer able. Additionally, she was a member of the Ebonettes Social Club and the Wannabe Club of Barstow.

Elores was preceded in death by her parents, Patsy White and Claude Liggans; two sons, Charles Vernon Weathers and Stephen Dale Weathers; brother, William Barnes; beloved grandmother, Laura McNair; and beloved first cousin, Louis Charles “LC” McDaniel.

Left to cherish many precious memories of Elores are: her children, Keith D. (Gloria) Weathers, Erwin Jay (Sherry) Weathers, Monica T. (Keefe) Weathers-Fields, Patricia C. Gray, and Stephanie G. Scott; one aunt, Dessie Mae Scott; a beloved first cousin, Rose McNair; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren (too many to name); and innumerable cousins and friends who loved her and will dearly miss her.
