Bruce G. Johnston was born to William James and Irene Elizabeth on January 16, 1937, on a small family farm about 7 miles south of Candiac, Saskatchewan. He grew up tending to the family fields and animals with his eight siblings, where a strong, lifelong work ethic was instilled into him. When Bruce was 18, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he excelled in his chosen field as an instrument technician despite only having an 8th-grade education and was part of many winning call-shot competitions.
In 1957, Bruce was sent to serve overseas in France. While stationed here, he sent a marriage proposal home to his sweetheart Micheline Hrycak (Mickey). Mickey promptly responded with an enthusiastic "yes," and the small-town girl was soon sailing her way to France. On June 14, 1958, Bruce married the love of his life in a small ceremony on the base. The two would go on to have a long & happy marriage of 65 years, with four children (Greg, Donna, Debbie & Karen), 7 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
While with the RCAF, Bruce served one year in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, before returning to Canada, where he was stationed in Comox, BC and then Cold Lake, Alberta. Bruce left the service in 1977 as Sargent with a silver Canadian Forces Service badge for 22 years of honorable service, and he started a new career as an electrician with Esso.
When Bruce decided to retire from the workforce, he was not content to sit around and relax. Bruce was a man who always had to have something to do. Bruce decided to use his knowledge and resources to build houses in his newly acquired free time. Bruce built four homes for himself and his loving wife and one with his son for his family. Bruce loved hunting, fishing, golf, and traveling, including spending 18 winters in Texas with Mickey's sister Angie and brother-in-law Bernie.
He will forever live on in the hearts of those closest to him as a loving husband, dad, grandpa, & great grandpa. Rest in peace until we meet again.
