She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 72 years, Werner, and her children: Siegmar Engler (Johanna), Ingrid Russell (Edward), Erhard Engler (Linda), Karin Engler (Christian Frye), Ruth Hall (Brian) and Lore Wollf (Randy) along with ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Betty was born in 1930 on the Island of Rügen off the north coast of East Germany, but spent most of her childhood in the Greifswald area on the adjacent mainland. When she was a teenager, Betty trained as a seamstress. She and Werner wed in 1950 and in 1952 they moved to West Germany. In 1963 they emigrated to Canada and joined Werner’s father on a farm in Freedom, Alberta. Without Betty, Werner would not have been able to farm successfully. In 2010, Werner and Betty moved into the town of Barrhead, and for the past two and one-half years, Betty has lived at Shepherd’s Care Home in Barrhead. Last month, Betty and Werner celebrated their 72nd anniversary. They are long-time members of Barrhead Alliance Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Barrhead Alliance Church on Friday, September 23, at 2:00 pm.
Memorial Donations may be made in honour of Betty to GoFundMe for Engler Family by Erin Stelljes for the care of her 5 year old great granddaughter Olivia Engler in the USA, who has a rare form of cancer. (https://www.gofundme.com/f/engler-family?qid=85a9d40baf801875ef25b766700de4a0) Olivia is undergoing at least 40 weeks of chemotherapy and for part of that will be receiving radiation treatment. Their insurance will not cover a significant portion of their expenses.
