December 19, 1935 - July 24, 2023
Schuyler passed away peacefully at his home in Wilsonville, Oregon on July 24, 2023. He was 87 years old.
The second child born to Baxter and Beatrice (Tryon) Wallace in Taft, California, Schuyler was raised in Santa Cruz and Bakersfield, California, graduating from Bakersfield High School in 1953. He had three siblings: Nancy, Kirk, and Mary Kay.
While attending high school, Schuyler met the love of his life, Carol, while she was playing in a marimba band, and immediately knew she was the one for him! Upon Carol’s graduation from high school in 1955, they married and started their 68-year journey together.
Schuyler served eight years in the United States Navy, The National Guard, and the United States Army as a reserve. His employment included Western Geophysical Corp., Transonic, and Circuitdyne Corp., which was a company that he and several co-workers formed.
At the age of 30, Schuyler began working for the Kern County Fire Department. He progressed through the ranks of Firefighter, Engineer, Captain, Battalion Chief, Chief Arson Investigator, and retired while serving as the Chief Deputy after 30 years. He loved his career with the fire department, making lifelong friends and lifelong memories, which he loved telling about to anyone who would listen.
Schuyler, or “Scotty” as he was known to his friends and colleagues, loved sports, and through the years was involved in softball leagues, umpiring high school baseball, refereeing high school and college football. In addition, his hobbies included golf, fly fishing, camping, woodworking, and reading.
Schuyler and Carol had four children: Schuyler Jr., Cheryl, Laura, and Michael. As a family they enjoyed camping, the coast, the mountains. Upon retiring, Schuyler and Carol took a month-long train trip, which culminated into a book he wrote and had published titled Tin Lizard Tales.
Schuyler adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and often made yearly trips to Oregon to watch his four grandsons in whatever activities they were involved in, and then after he and Carol moved to Oregon in 2010 they made trips to California to visit his daughter and granddaughters every chance they got.
Schuyler was preceded in death by his son Michael; his daughter Laura; his mother, Beatrice; sister Nancy; brother Kirk; and close cousins Stuart and Cynthia.
Schuyler is survived by his loving wife, Carol; son, Schuyler Wallace, Jr. and his wife, Kari; daughter, Cheryl Vorhees; seven grandchildren (Natasha, Nichole (Steve), Jared (Heather), Schuyler III (Anna), Bret (Allie), Evan, and Naomi (Patrick); eight great-grandchildren (Steven, Kylah, Nathan, Chase, Caleb, Carson, Sophie, and Blake); son-in-law, Kenneth Slate; sister, Mary Kay King; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
