Rod was born on August 6, 1944 in Porterville, CA to Carl and Lillian Avery. He was active in 4-H and sports as a youth. His love for cars began at a very early age and continued throughout his life. He earned his business diploma from Sawyer Schools of Business in Los Angeles in 1964 and then worked for Cal Cot. In 1966 Rod went to work for Contel which spanned for 32 years. He earned numerous recognitions for his outstanding leadership, teamwork, and work ethic. After Contel merged with GTE, Rod did consulting in Kansas City and Texas. He finished his career with 10 years for the County of Kern. Though he wore many titles over the years he took pride in each one. His favorite job of all was as a loving husband of 45 years to Alice, father to Leandrea and Ryan Slayton (son-in-law), Amy and Ryan Young (son-in-law), and loving Pa to his grandkids, Conner and Brynna Slayton, and Colby, Jared, and Brady Young. He was loved much by all his family and friends.
Rod is survived by sisters, Carole Hunter (and husband Charlie), Brenda Gooch, and sister-in-laws, Sarah Dickey (and husband Ron), Sherry Peladeau (and husband James), Judy Love (and husband Ernie), and many nieces and nephews.
