Gene was an outdoor sportsman usually as a single participant. In high school he participated in Track and Field and Swimming and lettered in each for East Bakersfield High, bringing back many Valley Championships for himself and the school. He also enjoyed the sport of archery.
After graduation in 1954 he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Long Beach for 4 years. On the USS Rochester during the Korean War era.
When he returned to Bakersfield, he received his BA from Bakersfield College. He worked 39 years for Kern County, 1st in adult conservatorship, then, Child Protective Services, which he loved and built a relationship with all his kids. Many would remember him years later. During the years he has ran many 5K (3.5mi) 10K (6mi) 1/2 marathons and full marathons, even did a couple triathlons. Mack enjoyed riding his bike, sometimes out to Hart Park and back. He loved martial arts, taught and participated, competed and belted in 7 different variations. He had quite the reputation in martial arts.
Mack also served with the Kern County Sheriff's Department for almost 40 years, as a regular and reserve.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 yrs., Bunny. Five sons, Steve, Danny (Dorthea), Eric (Michelle), and Patrick (Kelley). As well as sister, Shirley Wright and numerous other relatives. Preceded in death by his son Russell who passed November 7, 2022.
Mack's visitation will be held Thursday, August 31, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Hillcrest, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, 93306. (located at the backside of the Chapel through the glass doors)
Funeral Service for Mack will occur Friday, September 1, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Valley Baptist Church on the Olive Drive Campus, 5500 Olive Drive, 93308.
Reception will take place at Valley Baptist Reception Hall immediately following service located at 4800 Fruitvale Ave., 93308, and concluding at 1:30 PM.
Honor's will take place at Graveside Promptly starting at 2:00 PM, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306. Mack will be laid to rest in Garden of Memories.
