Jose (Joe) Luis Cantu (68), was born on March 4, 1956, in Texas. He passed away on September 10, 2024, in Lamont, CA. Living in a small town, he still had an incredible impact on everyone he met. His legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will live on through the countless lives he touched. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, as his warmth, humor, and boundless creativity continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
Better known as Tio Joe to his family, Cuate to those who knew him, and Papa by his grandchildren. He poured his heart into his family, effortlessly giving of himself in countless ways. He was always ready to help wherever and however he could. He brought boundless joy, filling every moment with laughter and lighthearted humor, and always leaving a smile on the faces of those surrounding him.
By 18 he began working to provide for his son, demonstrating a strong work ethic. A young tradesman, he spent 20 years as a cement finisher before retiring. Beyond his life in the workforce, he competed in pistol shooting tournaments, an avid practitioner of judo and kung fu, reflecting his diverse interests and competitive spirit.
He was a devoted fan of Bruce Lee. He enjoyed performing and filming silent movies with his twin brother, Felix, and they spent countless hours role-playing with their nephews, nieces, and childhood friends; creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime.
A true inventor at heart, he delighted his family with makeshift gadgets. His grandkids eagerly awaited their birthdays, knowing their papa would have something inventive and special for them. Whether it was racing his homemade creations down driveways or launching them into the sky, his playful energy was contagious. He never outgrew his love for adventure, always inspiring those around him to embrace their inner child.
He is survived by his son, Jose (Joe) Cantu Jr., his daughter-in-law Sonia, and his cherished grandchildren, Xaria and Velisity. His siblings are: Delia Rios (Reyes), Graciela, and Santos (Consuelo) He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Luisa Cantu, and his brother, Felix Jr.
A Visitation will be held on Monday, October 14th, from 5:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m at Greenlawn Southwest Main Chapel, located at 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield, CA 93313. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 15th, at 10:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Southwest Main Chapel, located at 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield, CA 93313. A graveside service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306.
Serving as pallbearers will be Harvey Ríos, Reyes Ríos Jr., Alex Ríos, Raúl Sianez , Kristian García, and Hector ‘Budearn’ Ruberte.
