John Julian Young was born in Santa Barbara, California to Barbara Mary and Calvern Clark Young. He grew up in Coalinga, Taft, and Bakersfield. John graduated from East Bakersfield High School and joined the United States Air Force. He proudly served in Korea as Staff Sergeant. He met the love of his life, Sally, upon return from the Korean War, when he asked for directions in Kingman, Arizona one day, beginning a lifelong love story of 66 years. He placed his family above all, lived and shared his faith every day. Long time parishioners of St. Joseph’s and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, John and Sally were very involved in faith programs and prepared family donuts on Sundays for many years.
John was an electrician by trade, working at United Electric Company and later as Foreman Electrician for the Kern High School District until retirement. His generous work for numerous friends and church projects spanned decades. He could fix anything.
John and Sally never met a stranger, maintaining a large group of friends from Marriage Encounter who traveled for pleasure and Christ, enjoying dominoes and canasta for decades.
John loved playing golf, teeing off at dawn frequently on Saturdays. He enjoyed going to BC Football games and watching his beloved Dodgers on TV. His late in life prized possession was his pristine convertible red Ford Mustang, pace car from the Mesa Marin Raceway, which he happily showed in local car events. He was proud to have been able to participate in Honor Flight to Washington DC.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sally, his parents, siblings, Barbara Nadine Perry and Robert Francis Young, and is survived by his six children, Sharon (Dale) McBride, Mary Warren, Rick (Tammy) Young, Julia (Gary) Calvillo, John (Penny) Young, and Jim (Ana) Young. John’s numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren will miss their cherished Poppi.
The family would like to thank the Rosewood Community and Hoffman Hospice for their loving care in his last days.
Celebration of the Holy Mass will be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church June 3 at 11 AM. Services will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd.
