On November 19, 1962, she married John Edmund Kunkel. Following her graduation from Lawrence University, she taught for several years before starting her family. Most recently and immediately prior to her retirement in 2008, Virginia taught kindergarten for 21 years at Pond Springs Elementary School.
Prior to moving to Austin, Texas, Virginia and her family lived in Wisconsin and Minnesota where she helped out with Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, PTA, and the League of Women Voters. She moved to Austin, Texas, in 1979 which she considered home for the past 32 years. Her community involvement continued in Austin with the Boy Scouts of America and Delta Kappa Gamma.
She traveled frequently with John and her family, experiencing many adventures throughout her years. She especially enjoyed Christmas vacations in Kauai. Her interest in sports included attending Lady Longhorn basketball games and Round Rock Express baseball games.
Virginia, widow of John Edmund Kunkel, is survived by her son, Scott Kunkel and wife, Pam (and grandchildren Jack and David) of Champaign, Illinois; daughter, Sandy Bishop and husband, Derek (and grandchildren Danny and Kristi) of Austin, Texas; sister, Mary Powell of La Crosse, Wisconsin; and brother, Robert Vance of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

The family will receive guests for visitation on Monday, May 21, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home, in Austin, followed immediately by a funeral service. Burial will follow at Cook-Walden\Capital Parks Cemetery.
