Virginia Lee ("Ginny") Godfrey, died peacefully at home in Austin at age 85 on February 18, 2009. She was born February 11, 1924 in Galveston to Charles ("Chas") and Gladys ("Peg") Farr and spent her childhood in Baytown. She graduated from the University of Texas at age 19 with a degree in journalism and worked as editor of the Texas Bar Journal. In 1944 she met and married Lt. Norman Bell Godfrey, who served with the Army Air Forces in England. After the war, they lived in Berkeley, California, and Houston while Norman finished his bachelor and doctoral degrees in organic chemistry. They moved to Austin in 1954. Ginny was an avid tournament bridge player and Life Master. For almost twenty years, she was secretary and newsletter editor of the Austin Downtown Lions Club. She was preceded in death by husband Norman and son Norman Wilson Godfrey. She is survived by daughter Gerry and son-in-law George Priest, of Cedar Creek; and son John, daughter-in-law Ellen and grandsons Henry and Michael Godfrey, of Rockville, Maryland. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at University United Methodist Church, 2409 Guadalupe. Reserved parking will be at Platinum Parking, 25th & Guadalupe.
