Tommie Harris McCalla, born in Devine, Texas, to Charles C. and Orpha Brown Harris on April 23, 1903, died in Austin, Texas, on October 17, 2004. Tommies family moved to San Antonio where she attended Old Main High School. She married Kenneth McCalla on February 6, 1926, and the couple moved to Houston where they lived until moving to Austin in 1944. Preceded in death by her husband, Judge Kenneth McCalla, and her son, Kenneth McCalla, Jr., Tommie is survived by her son, Dudley D. McCalla and wife, Maline, by seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. After her husbands death in 1959, Tommie was a valued employee of the Austin Public Library for several years. Her family was the principal interest of her life and her culinary skills were legendary among family and friends. Though no longer with us on this earth, she will live in our hearts forever. The family thanks those who gave Tommie great care and affection in recent years: Barbara Ann Hudson, Leatha Whitley, Alice Cain and Lisa Limuel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church or the Austin Public Library Foundation. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. Interment to follow at Memorial Hill Mausoleum.
