Thomas “Tommy” Lee Nanyes, took the Lord’s hand and went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 after 73 years of life. He died peacefully surrounded by his beloved wife, Norma, and his three children; Natalie Woolverton, Tommy Lee Nanyes, and Keith Nanyes.
Tommy was born on January 23, 1947 in Galveston, Texas to Ollie and Frances Nanyes. He grew up playing gospel music accompanied by his sisters. At age 6, the family relocated to Austin where he graduated from Austin High School. On April 29, 1966, he married the love of his life, Norma Maner. They shared a life together for 53 years.
Tommy worked several jobs throughout his life, but primarily with TxDOT’s Machine Shop where he retired in August 2003. After retirement, he could be found in his home workshop almost daily. The family saying was, “If Papa can’t fix it, no one can”.
His love for music was celebrated through his music ventures, including the H.I.S. Band at his Church, the Concordia Oakwilt Boys, and The Night Skies Band. Playing music alongside others brought Tommy great joy. As a devoted man of God, he was treasured at his home church Christ Lutheran Church, as a long-time member and devout worshiper. He led a life of service for others and if you were blessed to know him, you knew of his selfless nature.
As a father, Tommy was a role model for his children. He always took care of his family and took pride in teaching and guiding them. A loving ‘Papa’ to 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, he believed his family was one of his greatest blessings.
Tommy had a gentle spirit and was a humbling reminder of patience.
It is heaven’s gain for our Lord to have called him home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial in Tommy’s name be given to
Christ Lutheran Church, 300 East Monroe St.,
Austin, TX 78704.
