It is with deepest sorrow that we announce Stanley Curtis Kirby of Austin, Texas, age 84, beloved father, son, brother, family member, life partner and friend passed away on Monday, January 24th. Stan was born on July 30th, 1937, in Harlingen, Texas, to Myrtle West and Curtis Green Kirby, and was older brother to sisters Pat and Barbara.
Stan is survived by his sister Barbara Kirby Armstrong, daughter Susan Kirby McDaniel and life partner Richard Crow, son Stephen Curtis Kirby, niece Megan Ann McDaniel, and dear friend and life partner Carol Languell. Stan is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Futch Kirby, sister Pat Kirby Dallagher, son-in-law Floyd D “Marty” McDaniel, and grandson John Kirby McDaniel. We take comfort knowing Stan is now reunited with them.
Stan attended Texas A & I in Kingsville and Navarro College in Corsicana. After graduation, he started his career with Ford Motor Credit and eventually moved to Shreveport, Louisiana. This is where he met his loving wife, Dorothy Futch. He was the good-looking guy with the ski boat and their courtship was a time filled with weekends waterskiing on Lake Bistineau. They were married on November 27, 1963, at Dot’s family home in Farmerville, Louisiana. Farmerville was a special place for them, and they returned there with family and friends throughout their lives.
While in Shreveport, their first child Susan Kay was born, with their son Stephen Curtis arriving after they moved to Monroe. From Louisiana, the family eventually moved to Denton, Texas. They raised their children there and passed along their love of waterskiing and camping. They were devoted neighbors and were active in First Christian Church, where they made many dear friends.
Stan was an avid golfer. The game itself was a passion, as was having an excuse to spend time with friends, where the game and the conversations were all that mattered for a while. He also enjoyed wood sculpting where he became quite skillful in creating everything from eagles to cowboy hats.
After both retired, Dot and Stan moved to Austin to be near their grandkids. Living on a golf course, Stan continued to make new friends and play the game he loved. Several years after the Dot passed, Stan met Carol Languell, who became a dear friend and life partner. Carol and Stan enjoyed many Hallmark movies together. In the last few years of his life, he found a degree of happiness with Carol that he never would have alone.
Laughter and love abounded in Stan’s life. He prided himself on staying in shape, he lived with compassion for others, and he valued the people in his life. We return Stan now to the Lord, and feel grateful that we knew him.
