Shirley Cofield Strange, age 85, of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. She was born on August 6, 1939, in Florence, Alabama, to Maude Schmidt and William Ted Cofield. Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Jerry A. Strange, and her children Cindy Weaver, Lisa Newill, Joni Soriano, and Leslie Carlin. She is preceded in death by her parents, Maude Schmidt and Ted Cofield; her sister, Janice Hare; her twin brother, Jerry Stan Cofield; and her son, Jerry “Jr.” Strange II.
Shirley spent her formative years in Ajo, Arizona, where she excelled in school, played the clarinet, and was a proud baton majorette. Her love for literature and the English language led her to a career in education, where she passionately taught poetry, English Literature, Shakespeare, and drama.
Shirley loved to entertain family and friends, and many happy memories were made at their Austin, OakHill home. Shirley was a passionate gardener and Southern foodie who loved to cook, often revising recipes for her personal cookbook. Shirley also enjoyed playing table games with family and friends, never letting anyone win easily! She was an avid supporter of University of Texas Football and UT Ladies Basketball, often attending games and tailgating with friends.
Together with her husband Jerry, Shirley traveled the world, exploring destinations from Antarctica to the Great Wall of China. Known affectionately as “Nana” to her grandchildren and “Aunt Shirley” to her nieces and nephews, she was cherished for her kindness, intelligence, and fun-loving spirit. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
