He attended L.C. Anderson High School where he graduated in 1969.
Samuel then enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country proudly for several years. After honorably discharging from the military he began a career as a police officer with the Austin Police Department.
Samuel's career in law enforcement was decorated with numerous accomplishments. He served as the treasurer of his cadet class. Also, at a time when minority officers were few he became a valuable asset to the East Austin Community for his ability to be both protector and friend.
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel E. Gilbert, Sr., mother, Alberta G. Gilbert and brother, James R. Gilbert.
He leaves to cherish his memory five children; sons, Samuel E. Gilbert, III (Tiffany), DeShon Collins, Jermaine D. Gilbert and Justin R. Gilbert; daughter, Regina R. Gilbert; sister, Jo Ann Gilbert-Moseley; sister-in-law, Debra Gilbert; aunt, Maud E. Patton; three grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
