Sam served in the 117th Signal Radio Intelligence Co during WWll from September 1942 till November 1945. He was a Teletype Operator and saw action in Tunisian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Rhineland, Southern France and Central Europe. He received Citation Award for Meritorious Service Unit Plaque for Superior Performance of Duty in France and Germany. He earned EAME Campaign Medal with 6 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal and WWll Victory Medal.
He met his wife, Mildred in San Antonio, Texas, and was married for 68 years. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Spears; daughter, Kathy Clayton, and son-in-law, Jerry Clayton; son, Sam Spears and daughter-in-law, Cindy Spears; son, Rick Spears and daughter-in-law, Debbie Spears; grandsons, Jonathan Spears and Melissa Combs, Justin Spears and wife Nicole Spears; granddaughters, Kelly Fowlkes and Jordan Fowlkes; Emily Polson and Taylor Polson; great-grandsons, Jackson Fowlkes, Oliver Spears, Tucker and Trace Polson; and great-granddaughter, Josie Fowlkes.
Sam attended both The University of Texas and St. Edwards University. He had a successful business “Sam Spears Employment Agency” for many years in Downtown Austin.
Sam was an avid golfer and fisherman. He passed his love of life to his family and friends. He never met a stranger.

A Funeral Service honoring Sam will be held at 1:00 PM, on Sunday, March 18, 2018, with interment to immediately follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
