Arrangements under the direction of Robert Lee Turner, 89, of Austin, joined our Lord in heaven on Wednesday afternoon February 19, 2014. Robert Lee was born on August 17, 1924 in San Antonio, TX, to parents Estley Franklin Turner and Ruby Singleton Turner and married to Annabelle Turner of Austin for 65 years.
Robert Lee is preceded in death by his parents Estley Franklin Turner and Ruby Singleton Turner, his brothers Westley Turner, Samuel Turner, sisters Flora Mae Wilsey, Ruth Donaho, Wanda Thompson, and daughter-in-law Delma Garza Turner.
He is survived by his wife Annabelle Turner of Austin, TX, sister and brother-in-law Marian and John Gould of Arlington, TX, brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Arlene Turner of Powder Springs, GA, son and daughter-in-law Wesley R. and Shirley Turner of Ft. Worth, TX, son Donald Franklin Turner of Austin, granddaughters Sara Camp of Ft. Worth, TX, Leslie Zimpelman of Ft. Worth, TX, grandsons Jonathan Turner of Austin, TX, Jeffrey Turner of Austin, TX, and five great grandchildren; Zoe Camp, Winston Camp, Daniel Zimpelman, and Eva Zimpelman of Ft. Worth, TX, and Joshua Benjamin Abad Turner of Austin, TX, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A member of “The Greatest Generation,” Robert Lee graduated from Harlandale High School in San Antonio in 1942. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving six years in the South Pacific from 1942-1948 before being honorably discharged. Upon his return to the states Robert Lee became engaged to and married the love of his life Annabelle Burkland on January 15, 1949. Soon afterwards Bob landed a job with the Southern Union Gas Company in Austin, remaining there until his retirement in 1986. During his retirement years Bob took up his favorite hobby of carpentry, and could always be found in his shop located behind his house working on a project.
Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He’ll be missed dearly. On behalf of Robert Lee, his family would like to thank the staff at Seton Hospital for the care they provided as well as the staff at Buckner Villas for their daily love, care and support over the last two years.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock until seven o’clock in the evening, on Saturday, the 22nd of February 2014, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.
Funeral services will be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 23rd of February 2014, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin TX, 78702.
