Robert was born in San Marcos, Texas on July 9,1943 to the late Antonio and Maria Gonzales. He graduated from San Marcos High School in 1961, where he excelled as a trumpet player. In his spare time, he performed alongside his father at various musical events. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army. That same year Robert married his longtime sweetheart Mariana “MaryAnn” Mendez with whom he spent sixty memorable years. He was honorably discharged from his military service in February of 1965, having garnered various awards and merits.
He entered the civilian workforce in the mailroom at Teacher Retirement System of Texas. As he diligently climbed the ranks, he became a computer analyst and ultimately landed a prime position in management. At the time of his retirement in June of 1998, he was deemed an exemplary leader… well-respected, greatly appreciated, and admired by his colleagues, many of whom considered him a friend.
Those fortunate to have known him can attest to his razor-sharp wit, keen intellect and fierce determination. Over the course of his lifetime, Robert had a multitude of interests and hobbies. He loved taking photographs, often focusing his lens on loved ones. He was a wicked pitmaster and hosted countless barbecues. Along with MaryAnn and friends he traveled throughout Texas competing in chili cookoffs, winning numerous trophies and awards. An avid reader, he had a significant collection of books. His affection for music was clearly undeniable and he truly enjoyed listening to good tunes with family and friends.
Most notably, Robert will be fondly remembered by his intense passion for sports. He was an outstanding member of the Lion’s Club and one of North Austin Optimist’s most cherished coaches. He confidently, capably, enthusiastically, and compassionately coached a vast number of softball and baseball players… adults and children alike, many of whom still reminisce about him to this day.
He was preceded in death by his sons: Jeffrey Leon Gonzales, Richard Anthony “Chief” Gonzales, Everette Wayne “Coach Gonzo” Gonzales and Arthur Alan Gonzales, as well as his sister, Evangeline “Vangie” Perez.
He is survived by his loving wife Mariana “MaryAnn” Gonzales, son Kevin Gonzales, his siblings: Virginia Martinez (Joe), Henry Gonzales (Anita), Mary Lou Espinosa (Robert), Tony Gonzales, his grandchildren: Trish Gonzales, Anthony Gonzales, Jeremy Gonzales, his great grandchildren: Joseph Ramos, Alyssa Ramos, Alexandria Ramos, Angelo Taylor Gonzales, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends… too numerous to list. We acknowledge, respect and appreciate all those whom he has left behind.
Robert Gonzales was dearly loved and an uncompromisingly unique man. Once met, never forgotten. We’ll miss you, Coach.
