Bob did his “odd jobs” until he was well into his 70’s. He thought that he could do everything himself. He would dissect a problem, and then he could “fix anything”. He thought he was Mr. Fix It/Señor Toilet. About the time he turned 80, he began to say he was content with his life. Last year he told us, “I’ve had a good 85 years and I feel blessed.” He had certainly mellowed in his later years.
Robert grew up in Victoria, Texas. (He always talked about having to milk that darn cow.) He had to walk home at lunch time to do the milking and move the cow to a new area to graze. He loved motorcycles as a young man and even owned a motorcycle shop at the age of 18. Then he was drafted and served in the US Army. After serving his country, he went into real estate and later became a home builder. Then, May 25th, 1970, Bob married Genevieve Shelton.
Robert's nieces and nephews (the very youngest of which) referred to Bob as Sponge Bob. He never wanted to be referred to as Uncle Bob. He sometimes entertained the family with making train noises and animal sounds and even sang an Elvis song or two. The Alexander kids will always remember Bob for his SPEEDO bathing suits. They can picture him barbequing by the pool and sporting those awful SPEEDOS. He brought them many laughs. Bob thought he was the ultimate authority and connoisseur of fine dining. He indulged in:
1. Peanut butter on waffles
2. Ketchup on eggs
3. Jaw Breakers the size of ping pong balls
4. Pickles as the #1 green vegetable
5. He had no use for jellies and jams
The five Alexander Kids will forever remember Bob and Genevieve for babysitting them while their mom had surgery many years ago. It was always fun to be at their house because B & G had no children
Bob loved traveling around the world. His favorite countries were: Italy, Spain, France and Egypt. He also made many trips to China and had a real fondness for Mexico, where he and his wife had a home for 40 years.
Bob came to know the Lord and was baptized at the Christian Church in Victoria, Texas as a teenager. He later attended the Baptist Church.
Bob punctuated our family events and his closing thoughts with his own swan song. He sometimes bellowed out “Hallelujah”
