Robert (Bob) Brooks received his B.A. and M.A. Degrees from The University of Kansas. He went on to receive his Ph.D. from The University of Wisconsin. He served in the Air Force during the Berlin Crisis, and received an Honorable Discharge in 1963. Bob also was the Chief Announcer and New Director of KANU FM at The University of Kansas and anchored a daily half hour news cast. He came to Austin, Texas in 1969 to accept a position at The University of Texas, teaching in the Department of Radio, Television and Film.
Bob’s career at The University of Texas was a long and distinguished one. He received the Teaching Excellence Award, was the director of Graduate Studies, served as Grand Marshal for the College of Communication and retired as Full Professor Emeritus. He was respected by his friends, colleagues and his many students.
Bob was active in the church and was a member at Westlake Presbyterian for many years. He participated in the choir and enjoyed performing at Christmas Services over the years.
He married Alta Rae Fann on June 16, 1961, and they were married for over 42 years. They have a daughter, Allyson Fertig, son-in-law Michael, grandchildren Matthew and Brooke. Bob also leaves behind a sister Diane Eder, and nieces Valerie and Vanessa Hadley and Karen Clark. He was preceded in death by his parents Edna and Arthur, wife Alta Brooks, sister Norma Cochran and brother Don Brooks.
A Celebration of Bob’s life will be at 3:30 P.M., Monday, May 15, 2017, in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
