Robert Lee Batey Jr. was born July 28, 1922, in Hoyt, Milam County, Texas to parents Robert L. Sr. and Leona Pearl Baldwin Batey. He attended school in Hoyt, Milano, and Austin, Texas. The course of Robert's life was set early. Even as a young teenager he was shouldering the responsibility of a man in farm and ranch life. That responsibility is the most memorable thing to his siblings as Robert was like an additional father.
He joined the United States Army Air Corps early in World War II and served throughout the war. His last service was in the Southwest Pacific where he proudly served until final victory.
His first step on returning home was to marry his beautiful wife Helen, on August 18, 1945. They spent sixty-five years devoted to each other.
After his discharge he was employed by the University of Texas in the Defense Research Laboratory (later Applied Research Laboratory). He thrived in his work and spent his entire career there. He eventually became Head of Operations at the Lake Travis Test Station. His was a happy employment and he had a great respect and affection for his colleagues.
In his retirement Robert returned to his first loves of hunting, fishing and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Helen and his sister.
He is survived by two brothers and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly.
The family wishes to thank the staffs at Southern Hospitality Home and Odyssey Hospice Care for their loving care of Robert during his final days.
A graveside service will be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 6th of February 2013, at Austin Memorial Park under the direction of Cook-Walden Funeral Home.
