It is impossible to know what Bland was more proud of in his life; his kids, grandkids, wife, dogs, or perhaps the 11 year chip he carried in his pocket which allowed him to bask in all of life’s many blessings.
Bland was born in Beaumont, TX, raised his family in Houston, TX, and was settled in Austin, TX for the last 20 years. He followed his grandfather and father into the Oil & Gas business. He leaves behind his loving family, including his wife of 40 years Carol Lucas, son Philip Lucas, daughter Laura & her husband Bryan Kutcher, grandkids Lucas & Oliver Kutcher, and countless loved ones including Harry Lucas, Jr., Maria Paula González Kane, Hamilton Beazley, the Baldwin Family, the Baker Family, Luke Graves, and lifetime compadres he considered his family.
Bland was the kind of man who dug a trench in his neighbors backyard during a rainstorm in Houston so their house would not flood; you would always find Mr. Safety with a pocket knife on his belt, clean eyeglasses, headlights on, and he would never let you leave the house without cash in your pocket; married for 40 years he shared Carol’s goosey vocabulary and still had to tell her to turn left, the other left, sweetie; he taught us how to shoot a gun, ride a four wheeler, tell a dirty joke around a campfire, and recently shared his love for master woodworking. These skills paled in comparison to the life lessons he instilled in his family of how to live your life in service to others by being a compassionate, loving, kind, smart, salt of the earth, good man with the willpower and courage to better his life.
A million inside jokes, stories, sayings, and mannerisms will be kept alive for his grandkids, so they can always know him in their hearts. Blessings abound that Bland was able to hold his kids and grandkids as they entered this world, and that we were able to be by Bland’s side as God held him in His hands.
Bland is held in God’s Palm, peacefully passing after a courageous fight with cancer, surrounded by his loving family who are indescribably grateful and privileged to have had the best husband, father, and Pop Pops anyone could ask for.
A celebration of Bland’s life will be held at a later date once we can all gather together in person safely.
