Mary Jane Winslow née Klein was born to Emile Ludwig Klein and Jane Gaffney Klein in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 19, 1918. She was married for 58 years to Allen “Al” Winslow who predeceased her. She is survived by her three children, Allen Winslow, David Winslow (spouse Julie Winslow), and Cynthia Greig (partner Carl Williams), grandchildren Aaron Winslow (spouse Cara Henderson), A.J. Greig, Gina Sardis, Lindsay Donna (spouse Thomas Donna) and John Sardis, and great grandchildren Claire, Logan and Emma Donna, and Anna and Henry Paradise.
She was born, raised, and graduated from high school in New Orleans. After high school, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the State Department during World War II. It was there that she met her future husband, Al. After the war, they lived in Houston, Texas for several years before relocating to Austin where she has resided since 1954.
Mary Jane was a devout parishioner at Saint Louis Catholic Church and was involved in church activities throughout her life in Austin. She had a large group of friends from church, and belonged to various bridge clubs, a book club, and a widows club. She was active with her “mermaids” aerobics swim group for over 30 years at Crenshaw Athletic Club until just before her passing. She and Al also enjoyed traveling together. During their retirement, they traversed the globe, even taking a freighter across the Atlantic to Africa. After Al’s passing, she lived independently in her home for the remaining 17 years of her life.
Her good nature, character, sense of humor, and her ability to enjoy life continue to inspire her family and friends. We will miss her.
There will be a visitation at Cook-Walden Funeral Home at 6100 N. Lamar at 6:00 pm followed by a rosary service at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 9th. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, August 10th at 10:30 am at Saint Louis Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Road.
