Born in San Antonio, TX on January 17, 1927, to Juan and Isabel Gutierrez, Maria was the eldest of six children. Her passion was always about education, guided by her commitment to faith. She worked tirelessly to become one of the first female Hispanic women to graduate from the University of Texas. Maria’s passion for sharing her knowledge extended to include pre-K children through high school students, and even adults she educated with citizenship classes. She always put her family first, working at times three jobs to ensure they were provided for. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon Castillo, and is survived by her brother, Mike Gutierrez, and two sisters, Grace Gutierrez and Clara Silguero and their spouses and families. Maria was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is also survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Yolanda and David Brown, and their children Katie, Travis and Aimee, and great granddaughter, Terra.
Maria touched the lives of many people with her smile and generosity, and delicious cooking all the way to the end. Friends and family are invited to attend the viewing will be from 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday May 23, 2017, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N Lamar Blvd Austin, TX. Funeral Mass will be held at Dolores Catholic Church 1111 Montopolis Dr. Austin, TX on Wednesday May 24, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. with burial following at Assumption Cemetery Austin, TX.
