Larry Dale Smith of Austin, Texas, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016, at the age of 72. He will be greatly missed by all of his family, friends, neighbors and special high school classmates. Larry was born February 27, 1944, in San Saba, Texas, to Elbert LaRue Smith and Gertrude Miller Smith.
Larry worked as a Draftsman and later as an Engineering Technician for TxDOT, Bridge Division for 34 years, retiring in 2000.
Larry enjoyed working on all the old cars you could still work on and handled all maintenance on his home and rental property. He had a passion for baseball and coached many youth in South Austin for 15 years. He also delighted in travel, making it to all 50 states at least once. After retirement from work and coaching, Larry and Betty loved to spend time following their grandchildren’s athletic events.
Larry was preceded in death by his father and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by Betty, his wife of 53 years; son Steve and daughter-in-law Amy of Austin; son Rodney of Buda; grandchildren Claire, Wil, Josephine, Ethan, and Owen of Austin, and Keely and Kaden of Buda; his mother Gertrude Smith of San Saba; his brother Kenneth and sister-in-law Judy of Lampasas; sister-in-law Linda Hibler and husband Harry Dean of Austin; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Texas Oncology staff, Dr. Laurence Tokaz, Pam Garza and all of the infusion nurses for their compassion and care.
The family will receive friends at 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Thursday, May 12, 2016, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 P.M., Friday, May 13, 2016, Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Interment will follow after service at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions to be made in Larry’s memory to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
