Kay Ellen Jacobson Harvey was born August 1, 1940 in Pampa, Texas and passed away May 28, 2016 in Austin, Texas, at the age of 75. Kay fought a long courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family at time of death. The family is deeply appreciative of the quality of life she received through MD Anderson and for the compassionate hospice care of Christopher House.
Kay received the following degrees: a BA from University of Texas, an MS from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University at Commerce), and an MA from Texas Women's University.
From 1978-1993 Kay served as the Collection Development Librarian at East Texas State University. In 1993, Kay moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She worked at the western Pennsylvania OCLC affiliate until she was hired as Head Librarian at the Penn State Greater Allegany campus, where she retired in 2010 as Emeritus Faculty.
Throughout her career she was active in professional organizations such as the Texas Association of College Teachers, the Texas Library Association, the Pennsylvania Library Association, the Association for College and Research Libraries and the American Library Association.
Her love for and dedication to students led her to serve as advisor for the greater Allegany Honors students. Mom dedicated her life to promoting reading and research.
Kay lived life with strong convictions and was involved in integration efforts in the 50's and 60's.
She had a quick wit and sense of humor that brightened everyone's life.
She was a very devoted mother and grandmother and adored her five grandchildren.
Kay is survived by her two sons; David Harvey and his three children, Rebecca, Claire, and Elijah; Michael Harvey and daughter-in-law Melissa and their two children, Zachary and Alexander; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Nurit Jacobson; their son and daughter-in-law; Greg and Adrienne, and their daughter Micah; extended family; Margo Hoenig; and Gabi, Carl and Rene Dimetman. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Pauline (Berkman) Jacobson of Austin.
Graveside service will be held at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery at 11am on Monday, May 30th.
A gathering will follow the service at Westminster Manor, 4100 Jackson Ave, Austin, TX 78731 in the Solarium, on the 5th floor of the Preston building.
Shiva will be at 6pm in Room 1000 in the Windsor Building of Westminster.
