Judy was born in 1942 in Waynesville, North Carolina, to Jake and Pauline McCurry Capps and
grew up in her beloved Blue Ridge Mountains in the shadow of Mount Pisgah. She graduated
from high school in Candler, North Carolina, in 1960 and was a 1965 graduate of David
Lipscomb University, a private Christian College in Nashville, Tennessee. Following college,
she taught elementary education in that area and in 1981 earned the Doctor of Jurisprudence
degree from the Nashville School of Law.
In the early 1980s, and thanks to efforts by the Church to connect recently single people, Judy
began corresponding with Maurice Weed, Jr., a Church of Christ minister from Austin. They
married in 1983, living in Austin while Maurice maintained pastorship of the Holland Street
Church of Christ in San Marcos, Texas.
Throughout their marriage, Judy assisted Maurice in his ministry though she had no official role
as minister’s wife within the church. At the same time she had a distinguished career thanks to
her legal background. Although Judy was a member of the Tennessee Bar, she never practiced
law in Texas. Instead, her education and teaching experience gave her an important interest
and understanding of education law. She retired in 2012 from the Texas Association of School
Boards as policy consultant, where for many years she assisted school boards and
administrators throughout the state of Texas with the development and implementation of Board
policy.
Family remained foremost throughout Judy’s life. She and Maurice cared for her mother the last
years of her life, and Judy was a constant in Maurice’s life until her passing. She remained
close to Maurice’s children and was a constant, encouraging, loving presence to her own.
Moreover, Judy’s grandchildren were always special to her. Their pictures filled her home, and
she was keenly interested in their lives, even if distances made regular visits difficult.
Judy Weed is survived by her husband, Maurice Weed, Jr. of Austin, TX; her daughter, Suzanne
Clark and husband, Robert, of Spicewood, TX; her son, Larry McNutt and wife Tonya of Mt.
Juliet, TN; step-daughter, Cindy Dirksmeyer and husband Paul of Ft. Worth, TX; step-son,
Wesley Weed of Austin, TX; grandchildren Grace Hailey, Elise Hailey, Jacob McNutt, Emilee
McNutt, Ben Peterson, Laura Long, Brian Peterson; great-granddaughter Daisy Long; her sister
Renith Tacker of Roscoe, TX; and numerous other beloved family members.
